PROJECTS - LUDLOW FOYER

Ludlow Foyer
Ludlow, Shropshire
for South Shropshire Housing Association

Ludlow Foyer provides accommodation and training for homeless young people in the Ludlow area. Marston's Mill, a long-time disused grain store and well-known Ludlow landmark has been totally refurbished.

New floors were inserted below the roofs, which necessitated cutting through the Victorian roof trusses and inserting new steel structures without affecting the external appearance of the building.

The adjacent Harvest House, a 1960s conversion of an agricultural shed that once provided offices for the mill were also refurbished to provide lettable office space to help fund the project.

Steel sheds surrounding the mill were demolished to provide a courtyard where a new steel and glass entrance porch was built onto the mill. In addition a three storey lift and stair tower in steel, laminated timber and glass provided access to the residential part of the building and provided a bridge link to the first floor of Harvest House where the residents have their lounge. The Foyer provides 15 bedrooms, three communal kitchens, a residents' lounge, training facilities, offices and a cafe. Ludlow Foyer won a Ludlow Heritage Award in 2000.
